Who said Sixteen was sweet?

“Ah! Here comes sixteen… What do they call? Yeah got it, “Sweet Sixteen”. Right. My countdown began 5 days prior to my sixteenth birthday,”5….4……3….” I called my mom, “Mom! Am gonna turn 16 in just 2 days. I am a big girl, now!” I was very excited. Of course, to be in the middle of teen-age is something really exciting. And I was one such girl, carried away by the often heard words “Sweet Sixteen”. So, I thought I would throw out a big party, announcing everyone that I am 16. And what else? I kept the volume of my speakers in a full blast,

“Today I’m gonna ride away
And feel the sun throughout my hair
Finally free to be who I wanna be
Who that is I don’t really care

‘Cuz I’ve got friends who love me
Blue skies are above me
My blond hair (mine is not blond though,:-P)is everywhere

‘Cuz I’ve got friends who love me
Blue skies are above me
My blond hair (mine is not blond though,:-P)is everywhere

Sweet sixteen
Gonna spread my wings
Sweet sixteen
It’s my chance to shine
Sweet sixteen
Discovering
Sweet sixteen
So much more to life
Sweet sixteen”

After listening that Hilary’s song for the Seventeenth time, I listened and watched these shows, too. The 1984 film Sixteen Candles features a coming of age story as the lead character, Samantha Baker, turns sixteen. Before that, a song “16 Candles” was recorded by the Crests and several other artists, including Roy Orbison. A song by Billy Idol with the same name”Sweet Sixteen”, as well as a song by Neil Sedaka called “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” and a song by Chuck Berry titled “Sweet Little Sixteen”. Fall Out Boy recorded a song titled “A Little Less Sixteen Candles. I know that was quite insane, but that happened 1 year ago. Now, am quite a matured girl. Sitting in the bed, I was thinking, “Who in the hell named the age that way???? Wait till I get my hands on him…And bless Hilary for deceiving me that way!(And every one else too!)

Rather than the Bamboozling Adjective,”Sweet”, They should have named, “Watever is the antonym of “Sweet””. Yeah 1 year has passed by since you saw that thrilled, excited girl, with a care-free life. Of course, all teenagers from 13 to 19 face the same problems. But still, Why should they have named sixteen alone this way?? There must be reasons, right? And I was quite determined to find out that reason. I found out from the web. It says that, In U.S, that’s the age when they get driving license. And that’s the age of consent and that’s a milestone for them. But being in a country like this, We must not follow this phrase. I am quite sure. Teens suffer from the studying-hard disease to many bugging up activities in schools and at houses. And for me, I realized I was silly to be deceived by just a I-DONT-WANT-TO-MENTION-THE-WORD of a phrase. That was the age I got really bugged up with school, where we had nothing else apart from studying. Even now I am doing that, of course. But “Sweet”, in this context means Fun, Joy etcetera…but I didn’t come across such a feeling , often at all. Warning: to teens from 13-15. Don’t get deceived by this phrase at all. It has no inner intentions of meaning.!!!! :-D

  1. Good point, but I think we are getting influenced a lot more by westernization than modernization.

  2. hey dude,i dont understand why you shd think sixteen is not sweet…ask older people at your home abt their salad days and see how they lose themselves in their youthhood memories…all this exam tension, stress and confusion will only add to the beauty of your 16 th year…i bet you’ll realise this after a decade!it s honestly going to be sweet to recollect then, how u ran around with brimful of energy, seriously in love with your life…SIXTEEN IS SWEET!

  4. “Hey, if we grow old, we may generally say out teenage was really lovely, not only 16, got it? ” agree to that… itz not only 16, but teenage as a whole whichis sweet :-) and in malaylam, it is not 16, but 17 which is considered as sweet :)

  5. I agree to that point… I still feel that my school days were amazing. But your post talks about freedom which has not been given by most parents in India….

What you guyz dont get to understand is that I’m talking about freedom and enjoyment….Which we get in the age of 18 only, er….maybe we DO ENJOY in our 16th year, but it is as same as what we do in other teenages…It hass not got anything Special, as it is projected, unlike 18…. where we get A Driving License, We become MAJOR and adults….etc. So, In INDIA, IT MUST BE SWEET 18 AND NOT SWEET 16!!!!!!!!!

  9. Nice post there, akshaya!Cheers!

Well, i don’t understand your definition of happiness. Guess you think it depends on age. It’s not so!Whether you are 16 or 18 , just enjoy life. Enjoying life of course doesnt mean acting uncontrolled and acting in a stupid, perverse way. Happiness is something profound and very simple at the same time. There are many things in life that make us very happy, like tickling a child and to make someone laugh his head out by your witty words. These happen in everyday lives and these are simple. Profound happiness is something that differs from one person to the other:like helping someone out in need and unconditional love.

Akshaya, it all depends on how you take life. Hey, dont forget to enjoy your 16th year. Have unlimited fun!

  10. maybe..think of this…should getting a license n becoming a major be your base for happiness?remember it doesnt make u any happy..it only loads responsibility on u…and think of it…when you re sixteen u re still in yr parents’ responsibility…they take care of evrything rite frm your pocket money to your textbooks…and your job is jus to be happy n make evryone happy…these exams re the littlest sorta hindrances…you have bigger stuff later, yaar, like getting placed, coping up with a boyfriend(might sound easy n fun but i ve seen people goin mad wit these!),etc..see,do we all sit with our books 24*7?hardly ever…there s always the euphoria in our minds…and 16 is when u kinda get rid of ur confusions n get a little clear..the SENSE of freedom dominates u,tho’ur not totally free…even you have the jocund feeling of “what next???”dont you?just think..deep within you yourself know sixteen is sweet..
