The Elusive Fate…

Many weird things happen in one’s life.  Some *weird* instances  especially happen when you do stuff out of the norms. No, don’t confuse much. Let me give a vivid picture about what I mean, with some examples.

1)    Let’s say, You’re not a regular visitor to a swimming pool. But one fine day, you suddenly decide to go to the nearby swimming pool in the club in which you are a member. Unfortunately, you go there only to find the pool closed because of maintenance.

2)    You travel by bus daily and you’re this disciplined person who buys the ticket regularly in spite of the crowds and the fact that nobody’s checking your ticket. One day, only one single day you try to be a li’l adventurous and try travelling without a ticket, only to find yourself caught and fined by the ticket-checker who visits the bus  that particular day of all days.

Well, what’s the pattern behind all these happenings?! If you ask any well-experienced adult, they’ll come up with a single answer, *FATE*. Thala-vidhi or Thalai-ezhuthu.  Fate is one mystery that takes a very long time to understand. Every mythology speaks about Fate in a very distinguished manner. Some popular mythologies quote that fate is synonymous to the mystic spinning of threads  in which each thread represent a human’s life. Well, let’s not go deep into it. Put in simple words, the two reasons behind these instances maybe fate,  for spiritual people or just a simple co-incidence for those-who-don’t give in to all these fate and destiny stuff.

Something like that happened to me last night. Normally, I sleep in the bed at night. But last night, I suddenly had a craving (uh?) to sleep in floor in what-they-call-as pai. (mat!) After spreading the mat in my bedroom, I left to the hall, to read a novel ‘cuz 1) I was suffering from a short insomnia that night as my results were coming next morning. Besides , uh..I loved that book. 2) My parents were also sleeping in the same room and I did’nt want to disturb them by switching the light on. After completing the novel, that was one of Ludlum’s writing known as the “Holcroft covenant” (a kinda-crime novel that focused on killings and murder!!) I returned to my room at 12:30. I silently lied down without waking my parents. I still could’nt get sleep. My thoughts were still-wandering around the story-the deaths-my results – and the after-math of it, if it was the unexpected-and –everything -that- focused- on –fear. I was, literally trembling at that point of night and then the *weird* thing happened. Something was moving up my ankles. For a moment I thought it was just the air from the AC. But then, it was still moving. Involuntarily, I jerked my legs and the *lump* fell again on my ankles. My heart skipped a beat.I got up with a start, adrenaline flowing all over, shouting amma, eli!! (Mom, rat!!!), switched on the light. The li’l culprit was nowhere to be seen. It had run out of sight.

My grandma feels comfortable down and she sleeps on the floor every night. Nothing like that has ever happened to her. That was the first time I ever decided to sleep down  and that was the first time ever something like that e happened in the house. Uh..Though, it was just a rodent, the prospect of something crawling up ,esp. when you’re already scared out of your wits… definitely disturbing!!

Was it fate in the role of rodent playing it’s game on me, last night or was it just a mere co-incidence?? Heaven-knows!!

PS. Or was it just my illusion?? My mom said she never saw a rat in our house. No. I definitely felt something crawling up. Any similar instances?? Post them in comments.

  1. Destiny….or fate…hmmm…as u put forth is elusive…ummm….yup lesser mortals like us cant rewrite destiny….This aspect is succinctly told by W. Somerset Maugham from an Arab tale:

Death speaks: There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, “Master, just now when I was in the market-place I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me.” The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, “Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?” “That was not a threatening gesture,” I said, “it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.[2]

But again…destiny tends to affect ur life in a bigger way…i dont thnk you feelin somethin crawling has somthin to do wid destiny…well…lets jus say destiny has other more important thngs in mind…ive felt tht too…might be a side effect f abnormal adrenaline secretion…adrenalin promotes sudden oxidation of glucose and more blood and oxygen supply to the muscles…maybe u felt tht sudden surge of power or somethin…the human body is one f da most complex machines…understandin easch and every action f it is near to impossible…not to sound like a doc…but the point is u ought not worry abt such trivial thngs…

  2. Uh…I dont think you got my point. I’m not at all *worrying* about that incident. I was just curious….that made me to write stuff. I know it is not all related to Fate or destiny. After that bus inciedent I mentioned, if u cum home and tell others about wat happened..they might reply.. “Un thala-ezhuthu..or unakku luck illa..” What makes me wonder is… Of all days, why shud the rat attack me only when *I* sleep down n not my grandma…? or Why shud the pool be closed only on the day u visit??? or blah blah…about the ticket collector..!!!

This is just wondering n not worrying. You did’nt at all get my point, ram!

  3. Sorry dudette…maybe the word i used was wrong…but again fate is never gonna make a rat get attracted to you…maybe it was the burger with extra cheese you had for dinner…and some cheese dripped on ur clothes…:D…but apart from that…nope…fate is in your hands…fate can be rewritten…it has everything to do with that mind…decisions that you take…stuff like that…

P.s : I never had pizza or burger that day. I dont think *chapati* and *raita* might attract Rats!!

  6. I’m talking about coincidences….wierd co-incidences….and you’re talking about fate.
I’m just saying how some ppl presume co-incidences to fate n fate to a coincidence.

i sure agree with u askh…personally i never understood fate or destiny and till date i have never believed in both…i would say its just a co incidence…:) I’ve felt stuffs like this too…
well…if u ask me….u were anxious abt ur marks and that novel that u read just worsened ur stress level…u might hav slept thinking that some thing would become wrong that night and of course nothing can go wrong so ur mind kind of made that rat.ther was no rat…u just wanted ur parents to make u feel gud.ur brain created that rat to help u overcome ur stress and just think back…wher u able to sleep well after ur mom’s words??if u did then i think thats wat happened…its just complex brain science…i once read abt this in a neurology article…sorry i dunno the scientific terms
and abt those other incidents u wrote…i would say its just a co-incidence.
this is wat i understood…but everyone has their own way of explaining those incidents :)

  9. well…..not to totally disagree with ya…..maybe that mite have happened..but I still remember feeling the lump…! and anyway…..may/maynot be coincidende…I *do* believe in “the mystic spinning of threads” and “the chaos and the butterfly theory”…so that’s what makes me wonder still….!

  12. Umm…i get the point now…but from now on we will term them as ‘unfortunate coincidences’… shall we??take this P.T Period thing…if u had been in your proper uniform…this incident wouldve disappeared from your mind like that…poof…you chose your fate here…

  13. Umm… not exactly unfortunate. Lets see.. a similar incident.
you wanna have funk. but ur mom does’nt approve n one day she really gets annoyed seeing your messy tresses and forces you to the nearby salon. Irritated, you go there only to find the salon closed for the day. Atleast you could put it off for a day. And probably your mom might be in a good mood tomorrow.

What is unfortunate for some might turn fortunate for others. Like in the bus incident, the ticket collector’s fortunate cuz he could gain money and you become unfortunate.

    P.S:: *You* does’nt point you…lol!
